Un tel appareil est tout simplement une sorte de laminoir, composé de deux cylindres parallèles horizontaux, à écartement variable, tournant en sens inverses, en général avec des vitesses différentes [...], et que l'on peut chauffer ou refroidir [...] Par passages répétés entre ces cylindres, le caoutchouc se trouve plastifié et donne une feuille continue, enroulée sur l'un des cylindres, l'excès de gomme formant un boudin à l'entrée du laminoir.

Au sens strict, un «laminoir» est utilisé en métallurgie. On lui donne ici une extension de sens.

outil à cylindre : Ce terme nous semble douteux pour deux raisons : «outil» est un peu vague et constitue simplement une unité explicative; «cylindre» devrait être au pluriel puisque, comme le démontre le contexte ci-haut, l'appareil en compte deux.
