In 1970, the Ford Foundation initiated the Drug Abuse Survey Project to pinpoint more precisely what should be done to combat drug abuse. Its final report, Dealing with Drug Abuse ..., analyzed in detail the great gaps in basic knowledge of drug actions within the body, psychological factors involved in deciding to use drugs, and the role of drugs in contemporary American society; it also made a strong appeal for more research. The report's practical outcome was the creation of the Drug Abuse Council (DAC), which funded studies on illicit drug abuse from 1971 until 1978.

The de-icer actuated by cartridge (DAC) can be used for emergency work on ... transmission lines. The DAC is a portable device operated by remote control. It consists of a cylinder-and-piston system that can be suspended from a conductor or ground wire and fired by means of an electronic trigger. Installation from the ground is facilitated by the use of a line thrower. When the cartridge explodes, it generates a mechanical impulse that propagates along the span, breaking the ice instantaneously.

The concentration of a radioactive pollutant in air that generates a maximum permissible dose to individuals.

The permissible limit for inhalation of a radionuclide is the appropriate ALI [annual limit of intake]. This is given in units of activity, Bq. Because it is often easier to measure and control the concentration of radioactvity in the air than to measure or control the intake, the ALIs are used to calculate the Derived Air Concentrations (DACs). The Derived Air Concentration, or DAC for any radionuclide, is that concentration in air, expressed in Bq/m³ which, if worked in for a year (50 weeks of 40 hours each for a total of 2000 hours per year), would result in the ALI for inhalation. The normal breathing rate, based on Reference Man, is 2,400 m³ per year at work. The Derived Air Concentration is the ALI divided by the volume breathed in a year at work.
