DACITE [8 records]

Record 1 2011-12-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
  • Vulcanology and Seismology
DEF

Very fine grained to microcrystalline possibly ash undergoing later brecciation.

CONT

Before stepping on the bridge look very carefully at the rocks. This rock is called a breccia (a rock that consists of fragments of one or more older rock types). This rock is made up of lots of light green fragments surrounded by a darker green, fine-grained material (matrix). It has formed as a result of explosive volcanic activity. In this case, the light green fragments consist of a volcanic rock known as dacite (fine-grained quartz and feldspar) so the rock is called a dacite breccia.

OBS

CONT

DEF

A rock formed of fine, dacitic volcanic detritus such as dust, ashes, sand, or fine fragments resulting from explosive volcanic eruptions by which lava is blown into fine fragments.

CONT

The major exposed rocks in the Dadi Property are Upper Jurassic Baiyinggaolao Formation dacitic tufaceous lava, dacitic tuff, rhyolitic tuff, and tufaceous sandstone and conglomerate, among which dacitic tufaceous lava and dacitic tuff are the main host rocks of mineralization.

CONT

Mt. Scott is the largest surviving satellite cone. As the glaciers were retreating magma began to rise deep within the volcano. A series of violent explosive eruptions of dacite pumice were thrown from vents.

Dacite magma, by slow cooling, becomes granitic plutons which are the major constituent of continental crust and matured island arc crust.

CONT

Mount St. Helens provides a good example of how a volcanic eruption can start and how the style of eruption can vary over time - even though the magma remains chemically similar. ... Steam explosions, some with small amounts of ash, continued intermittently until the catastrophic eruption began at 08:32 ... on 18 May 1980. The gas-rich dacitic magma, instantaneously released by the world's largest observed landslide, exploded in a blast that extended laterally for 32 km and vertically to a height of 25 km.
