Afin de réduire à un échelle plus commode la très vaste gamme de pressions acoustiques, on utilise l'échelle des décibels (dB). Les niveaux de pression acoustique exprimés en dB traduisent plus facilement les impressions de l'oreille humaine. Une modification du niveau de 10 dB correspond approximativement à doubler l'intensité perçue [...]. Sur l'échelle des décibels, un chuchotement à 2 m de distance aurait un niveau sonore d'environ 35 dB(A) alors que le niveau sonore moyen des bruits de fond dans un bureau serait d'environ 40 dB(A). Un marteau-perforateur à 15 m de distance peut engendrer un niveau sonore de 95 dB(A), alors que dans une discothèque les niveaux de bruit peuvent atteindre 110 dB(A).
