EULER [15 records]

Record 1 2011-11-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plate Tectonics
  • Tectonics
CONT

In order to perform accurate continental reconstructions across closed oceans, it is necessary to be able to describe mathematically the operation involved in making the geometric fit. This is accomplished according to a theorem of Euler, which states that the movement of a portion of a sphere across its surface is uniquely defined by a single angular rotation about a pole of rotation ...

OBS

Tout déplacement d'une plaque rigide sur une sphère se ramène à une rotation autour d'un axe qui perce la surface de la sphère en deux points diamétralement opposés, appelés pôles de rotation.

Record 3 2008-12-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plate Tectonics
DEF

Pole passing through the center of the earth about which a plate can rotate as a rigid body from any initial to any final position on the earth's surface.

CONT

The rotation axis pierces the surface of the earth at two points called poles of rotation, or eulerian poles.

CONT

The first paleogeographic map of the Mediterranean was constructed by Dewey et al. (1973) using finite Eulerian poles of rotation for the lithospheric plates and paleomagnetic data from the Atlantic oceanic crust. This method, highly innovative at the time, was based on the following criteria: i) the determination of the Eulerian rotation poles with the oceanic magnetic anomalies or, where this is not possible, with the tectonic structures identified on the plate margins ...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique des plaques
DEF

DEF

Euler's equations : A set of three differential equations expressing relations between the force moments, angular velocities, and angular accelerations of a rotating rigid body.

CONT

Forced Precession. Consider now what happens when a rotating symmetric body is subjected to a torque. It is clear from Euler's equation that when the applied torque is parallel to the angular momentum, the body experiences an angular acceleration which changes the magnitude of the angular velocity but not its direction. However, that is where the analogy to the translational case ends. Strange as it may seem, the equation implies that the response of the rotor to a torque applied normal to the spin axis is to rotate in a direction normal to both the spin axis and the applied torque. This phenomenon is also called precession.
