Number of frost free days is calculated based on the last occurrence of frost in spring and the first occurrence of frost in autumn. This is an especially important parameter for agriculture, because the variability in the number of frost free days is crucial for many agricultural activities such as planting and harvesting, but the impact of a strong frost can become an economic problem that affects the prices.

On calcule le nombre de jours sans gel à partir de la dernière occurrence de gel au printemps et jusqu'à la première occurrence de gel à l'automne. Il s'agit surtout d'un paramètre intéressant pour l'agriculture; la variabilité du nombre de jours sans gel est en effet cruciale pour de nombreuses activités agricoles comme la plantation et la récolte, mais l'impact d'une forte gelée peut devenir un problème économique, qui influe sur le prix des denrées.

Day during which the minimum temperature is less than 0°C (or, by convention, is equal to or less than 0°C).

Frost days, or the days when the minimum daily temperature dips below freezing, declined over the period 1948-1999, with the largest decreases in the winter and the spring. Easterling studied two questions for the 52-year period: Are there changes in the number of frost days per year or season?; and Are there changes in the dates of the first autumn frost, last spring frost, and length of the frost-free season? These questions are important to the understanding of our climate and to the agricultural community.

The Coast of Bays has relatively cool summers with warm winters. The average first day of frost is October 11 and the average last day of frost is May 14.
