Also called ice quakes or cryoseisms, the cracking or booming sounds occur when moisture below ground starts to freeze and expand. Le cryoséisme est un phénomène provoqué par le mouvement de la glace lors de période de froid extrême. Il peut être causé par une rupture soudaine d'un bloc de glace, d'un sol gelé ou d'une roche saturée en eau. Pour que cela arrive, il faut que de l'eau se soit infiltrée dans le sol avant que celui-ci n'ait eu le temps de geler complètement. La baisse des températures fera par la suite geler cette eau, qui prendra du volume et exercera une pression sur la terre ou les roches qui l'entourent, les faisant éclater. 1, record 1, French, - cryos%C3%A9isme
