Un procédé sol-gel alternatif au procédé GSP peut également être envisagé pour la fabrication des noyaux : il s'agit du procédé de gélification interne à l'hexaméthylènetétramine (HMTA). Le principe de ce procédé ne consiste plus à réaliser l'opération de gélification/précipitation par de l'ammoniaque qui diffuse de l'extérieur vers l'intérieur de la sphère, mais à l'aide d'un précurseur interne (HMTA) qui libère de l'ammoniaque lors d'une augmentation de température de 0 à 80 °C environ.
