Le braille abrégé utilise, quant à lui, la contraction pour divers groupes de lettres ou de mots; plusieurs règles dictent la façon de les écrire selon les circonstances. La lecture du braille abrégé exige une très bonne mémoire et beaucoup de pratique. Cette forme d'écriture occupe moins d'espace et peut se lire plus rapidement que le braille intégral.
