The High Commissioner for Human Rights is the United Nations official with principal responsibility for United Nations human rights activities, under the direction and authority of the Secretary-General and within the framework of the overall competence, authority and decisions of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on Human Rights. The High Commissioner is appointed by the Secretary-General with the approval of the General Assembly, due regard being paid to geographical rotation, for a fixed term of four years with the possibility of renewal for a further term of four years.

Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos; Oficina del Alto Comisionado para los Derechos Humanos; ACNUDH: La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que, de acuerdo con la "Ortografía de la lengua española", las palabras significativas que forman parte del nombre de instituciones se escriben con mayúscula inicial, por lo que lo apropiado es "Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos", a menudo abreviada como "ACNUDH" (mejor que "OHCHR", que corresponde a la sigla inglesa).

ACNUDH; OACNUDH: La sigla no lleva la letra O porque la Oficina pidió en su momento que en español se siguiera el mismo procedimiento que para crear la sigla del ACNUR, en la que, por analogía con el inglés (UNHCR), se había omitido la O de Oficina.
