KILL VEHICLE [3 records]

Record 1 2010-09-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Weapons
CONT

... the US Army began in 1989 a programme to develop a direct ascent kinetic energy ASAT [antisatellite weapon] (KE-ASAT). The main component is a kinetic kill vehicle (KKV) that would be launched by rocket booster to strike and put a hostile satellite out of service.

OBS

KE-ASAT: kinetic energy antisatellite.

Key term(s)
  • kinetic energy antisatellite kill vehicle
  • kinetic energy anti-satellite kill vehicle

Domaine(s)

CONT

Record 2 2010-09-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Weapons
DEF

The component of the ground based interceptor that intercepts an incoming warhead and demolishes it by the force of impact in the midcourse (i.e., exoatmospheric) portion of its trajectory.

CONT

In addition to having an infrared seeker, the EKV has its own propulsion, communication link, discrimination algorithms, guidance and control system, and computers to support target selection and intercept decisions in the final seconds, or end game, of its flight.

Key term(s)
  • exo-atmospheric kill vehicle

French

Domaine(s)
  • Armes orbitales
CONT

Record 3 2004-08-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Weapons
CONT

The Pentagon has been working on developing a miniature kill vehicle (MKV) for its ballistic missile interceptors. The availability of large numbers of these kinetic energy kill vehicles should allow a single interceptor to engage multiple warheads or eliminate sophisticated decoys while still leaving sufficient numbers of MKVs to intercept real targets.

CONT

MKV will employ multiple small kill vehicles housed within one carrier vehicle, and would be used against ballistic missiles in the midcourse stage of flight. The system will identify all credible threat objects and will destroy them using individual kill vehicles.

Domaine(s)

CONT
