KINETIC ENERGY PROJECTILE [2 records]

Record 1 2021-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weapon Systems
  • Energy (Physics)
CONT

To penetrate a target, KE projectiles rely on velocity and not an explosive charge. ... Historical research indicates that KE projectiles are responsible for forty percent of tanks knocked out in battle. Because KE projectiles are normally fired at very high velocity, they have a very flat trajectory (flight path), a decreased time of flight, and increased hit probability. The effectiveness of KE projectiles decreases at longer ranges, since the projectiles slow down during long flights.

OBS

kinetic energy projectile; KE proj: designations officially approved by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces.

Subject field(s)
  • Land Forces
  • Advanced Technology Weapons
  • Small Arms
CONT

The Oicw is still in the definition study stage with hardware not expected to reach the field much before 2005. Nevertheless, it can be determined that the weapon will fire 20 mm or 25 mm bursting grenades from one magazine-fed barrel and standard-calibre kinetic energy projectiles from another. Aiming will be assisted by combined day/night optical/passive infrared sights.

Domaine(s)
  • Forces terrestres
  • Armes de haute technicité
  • Armes légères
CONT
