Cette décision a amené les chercheurs à mettre au point une création typiquement québécoise, le plant de fortes dimensions (PFD), qui est destiné aux aires de reboisement où la végétation concurrente est très abondante et risque d'étouffer les jeunes plants. Comme son nom l'indique, le PFD est plus haut que les plants traditionnels, et il a un diamètre supérieur.

OBS

The larger size barefoot seedlings compared to container seedlings has often been seen as improving their competitive potential, although mortality of such stock has been higher. However, recent nursery practices are increasing the size of containerized seedlings and improving the quality of barefoot stock.
