Or, au même moment, dans la presse populaire, on parle de plus en plus des organisations modulaires ou virtuelles (les hollow organizations) qui ne gardent dans leur pays d'origine que les quelques activités jugées essentielles à l'avantage concurrentiel, les autres étant délocalisées et confiées à des sous-traitants. Par analogie avec le diamant de Porter, on peut dire que ces organisations «virtuelles» développe un «diamant virtuel». Elles créent leur propre diamant, pour servir des besoins spécifiques.
