Selon le Webster, l'adjectif phenolic, en plus du sens français «qui se rapporte aux phénols, qui contient du phénol», peut signifier aussi «of, relating to, or containing phenolic resin». C'est ainsi qu'on trouve des expressions comme molded phenolic base et phenolic-impregnated paper, où l'équivalent direct phénolique ne convient pas.
