NUCLEUS COUNTER [5 records]

Record 1 2022-10-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments
  • Atmospheric Physics
CONT

A condensation particle counter (CPC) detects individual [aerosol] particles by passing them through a tube with controlled humidity in which the nanoparticles act as condensation nuclei for water. They can be grown to a sufficient size so that each one produces a detectable flash of light when it passes through a focused laser beam and can be counted.

Key term(s)
  • condensation nucleus counter

French

Domaine(s)
  • Appareils de mesure
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
CONT

La mesure de la concentration en nombre des particules submicroniques dispersées dans l'air repose sur l'utilisation de compteurs de noyaux de condensation (CNC). Ces appareils sont fondés sur la détection optique de particules ayant été artificiellement grossies à la suite de la condensation d'une vapeur adsorbée à leur surface. Ils reportent ainsi en temps réel la concentration en nombre des particules de taille comprise entre quelques nanomètres et quelques micromètres [...]

CONT

A CCNC is a type of instrument frequently used for studying the cloud droplet activation potential of aerosol particles. In its simplest set-up, a CCNC consists of a saturator unit and an optical particle counter (OPC) frequently running in parallel with a condensation particle counter (CPC).

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Pollutants
DEF

An instrument for counting the dust particles in a known volume of air.

OBS

A nuclei counter is a type of dust counter which measures the number of drops of water which condense on the dust particles serving as condensation nuclei. Commonly "nuclei counter" and "dust counter" are used as synonyms.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Agents de pollution
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution

  • Climatology
DEF

An instrument developed by John Aitken for determining the dust content of the atmosphere. In operation, a sample of air is mixed, in an expandable chamber, with a larger volume of dust-free air containing water vapor. Upon a sudden expansion, the chamber cools adiabatically below its dewpoint, and droplets form with the dust particles as nuclei (Aitken nuclei). A portion of these droplets settle on a ruled plate in the instrument and are counted with the aid of a microscope.

OBS

"Pulvimètre" n'est pas attesté dans les dictionnaires généraux mais on l'utilise couramment dans les documents techniques.
