La physique du noyau. Niché au cœur de l'atome, le noyau n'a pas encore dévoilé tous ses secrets. En effet, il est composé d'un ensemble de n (1 à 300) nucléons (neutrons et protons) et sa compréhension nécessiterait à la fois de bien connaître les forces de cohésion mises en jeu, et de résoudre mathématiquement le problème de n corps en interaction. Aucun des ces deux problèmes n'est à l'heure actuelle complètement résolu.

La vocation du GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds) est de contribuer à l'avancement des connaissances sur la physique du noyau, et plus particulièrement sur sa cohésion.
