The Floating Screed Paver. The principle of the floating screed asphalt paver is that the screed will establish its own level, based on the height of screed tow point and adjustment of the screed angle. The Screed is independent of the rest of the paver. If the screed tow point can be maintained in a precise line, the asphalt will be spread to perfect level.

Les bétons bitumineux et les enrobés denses à chaud. [...] L'engin de régalage et de réglage usuel est le finisher à screed flottant. Schématiquement cet engin comporte : un châssis automoteur sur chenilles; une trémie de réception des enrobés dans laquelle se déversent les camions; un tapis métallique amenant les enrobés vers l'arrière de l'appareil; deux vis hélicoïdales répartissant les enrobés en largeur; une barre vibrante destinée surtout à faciliter l'extrusion des enrobés sous le screed (tamper); une poutre lisseuse appelée communément screed flottant et qui est chauffée.

Concrete Pavement ... The paver extrusion plate or screed shall extrude the concrete under load, properly shaping and compacting the concrete into a dense, stable mass.

The paver-finisher shall spread, consolidate, and shape the plastic concrete to the desired cross section in one pass. The paver-finisher shall be equipped with a full width "knock-down" auger, capable of operating in both directions, which will evenly spread the fresh concrete in front of the screed or extrusion plate.
