CONT

Round/Globular ... this type of plant material form has a distinct rounded or spherical shape. European beech (Fagus sylvatica), silver linden (Tilia tomentosa), Japanese maple (Acer palmatum), Cornelian cherry dogwood (Cornus mas), and Indian laurel fig (Ficus microcarpa) are all examples of globular plant form. Rounded plant forms are one of the most numerous types of plant forms and therefore typically constitute the majority of plants used in a design composition ... rounded plants are nondirectional and neutral in their ability to lead the eye. Therefore globular plants can be easily used to give a design unity by their repetition throughout the composition. They can serve as the neutral, soft plant form against which the other more striking forms are opposed.

CONT

... rounded plant outlines have an affinity for rolling topography.

CONT

A columnar plant form is the same as a fastigiate form except that it has a rounded top. A sentry maple (Acer saccharum monumentale) and Hicks yew (Taxus media hicksi) are examples of columnar plants. Columnar plant forms have the same design uses as fastigiate forms.

CONT

Formes dressées, élancées, fastigiées. Elles sont nettement plus hautes que larges et expriment un mouvement vertical très accusé, comme un jaillissement à partir du sol. Elles font songer à des colonnes et présentent à ce titre un caractère architectural.

Pyramidal/Conical. This type of plant form is conelike in appearance, gradually tapering from its base to an observable point. Examples include spruce (Picea sp.), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), and katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). Pyramidal plant forms are very sharp and distinct in their outline in addition to possessing an easily noticeable pointed top ... some design theorists suggest that conical plant forms be used cautiously in visually level regions where mountains are lacking. Finally, conical plant forms may be harmoniously used in formal, architectonic designs where stiff, geometric shapes are appropriate.
