Fast pyrolysis is differentiated from flash pyrolysis primarily with respect to temperature, vapour residence times and end-product. Extremely rapid heating rates (about 105°C/s), high temperatures (greater than 600°C) and short vapour residence times less than 0-5 s) are required to maximize the production of high quality gases (i.e. olefins, other hydrocarbons) at the expense of char and condensible liquids. 4, record 19, English, - fast%20pyrolysis

Upon heating, biomass materials undergo solid phase pyrolysis at relatively low temperature (300°C), forming reactive volatile matter, a few permanent gas species and solid char. Unlike the various coals and peats, biomass materials typically lose 70% or more of their weight by the solid phase pyrolysis reactions. This transformation of the bulk of the biomass material from the solid to the vapor phase suggests the important role of vapor phase chemistry in the pyrolysis of biomass materials. Recognizing the highly reactive nature of the major constituents of the volatile matter, the significance of the vapor phase chemistry becomes even more apparent. 1, record 28, English, - vapour%20phase%20pyrolysis

The use of biomass as a feedstock for the production of energy and chemicals has been a popular research topic over the past decade. One of the technologies receiving a great deal of attention is liquefaction in which biomass is converted to oil under high temperatures and pressures. This technology has evolved from a slow, chemical intensive process to a very rapid operation requiring little more than water. Feeling that typical reactor residence times (1-2 hours) were excessive, Beckman developed a small unit capable of reducing heat-up times to less than three minutes. Under these conditions it was found that neither a catalyst nor reducing gas was required. A mixture of only wood and water, when rapidly heated to 350°C, yielded an oil, char and gaseous and aqueous products. 1, record 33, English, - aqueous%20pyrolysis

1, record 47, French, - point%20de%20pyrolyse
