How do analog sampling oscilloscopes achieve [their] accuracy ... The trigger event occurs several dozen nanoseconds ahead of the sample point and initiates a variable monostable that causes successive sample points to occur at an increasing distance from the trigger event. Thus the analog sampling oscilloscope can build up a stable display of a waveform, which is many times faster than the sample rate.

CONT

A sampling oscilloscope is a special type of oscilloscope that uses a technique called sequential time sampling. This type of sampling is best suited to repetitive waveforms or those that are derived from a regular clock, such as serial data streams, clock waveforms and pulses in digital circuits, semiconductor test patterns, and amplifier pulse-response and rise-time tests.
