L'Ifremer résulte de la fusion de l'ISTPM (Institut Scientifique et Technique des Pêches Maritimes) et du CNEXO (Centre national pour l'Exploitation des Océans). La réunion de ces deux organismes à vocation maritime, procédait d'une volonté et d'une logique, celles de confier à un seul établissement public de recherche la mission de développer un ensemble de recherches de grande ampleur afin de mieux exploiter les ressources de la mer.

L'histoire de l'ISTPM commence en 1918 sous le nom d'Office Scientifique et Technique des Pêches Maritimes (OSTPM). [...] Le décret du 14 octobre 1953 modifie son appellation : il devient l'ISTPM. Il est toujours chargé «d'effectuer les travaux ou recherches relevant du domaine des sciences de la mer et intéressant directement les pêches maritimes et les industries qui s'y rattachent». Trois missions : la recherche, le conseil technique et les contrôles sanitaires et techniques.

The Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) was founded in July 1876 as the Marine Zoological Sation and is presently one of the major European Oceanographic Institutes. NIOZ is a research institute under the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Its mission is to pursue multidisciplinary marine research related to phenomena and mechanisms in coastal and shelf seas as well as the opean ocean and involves close co-operation between physicists, chemists, geologists and biologists.
