Le genou (d'un animal) a pour base anatomique les os du carpe. Chez le cheval, le beau genou est «sec», contrairement au genou «empâté», qui est noyé dans un abondant tissu conjonctif; on le recherche ample comme toutes les articulations. De profil, le genou se trouve dans le prolongement de l'avant-bras et du canon; trop en avant, il est dit «brassicourt» (défaut congénital) ou «arqué» (défaut acquis); dévié en arrière, il est «creux» ou «renversé».
