Les personnes handicapées sont souvent stéréotypées comme ayant une santé et une qualité de vie médiocres, et elles ne sont pas bien traitées à d'autres égards. Ces stéréotypes constituent une barrière dans la façon dont les gens perçoivent les personnes handicapées. Ces stéréotypes peuvent conduire à la discrimination, ce qui limite leur capacité à participer.
