TAIL ENDER [2 records]

Record 1 2010-10-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cycling
DEF

The last rider in the race.

CONT

After the rest day, the Tour de France is a four-day race for anyone who wants to make it to Paris ... It will be interesting to see if the Lantern Rouge (last place) will change. We might as well look there because I don't think the Yellow Jersey will change.

CONT

As many of you know, lanterne rouge is the name given to the last-placed rider on general classification in the Tour de France. Although clearly neither the fastest nor the strongest rider in the field, what typifies the lanterne rouge is their stubborn, tenacious refusal to throw in the towel (when their legs, and good sense, might dictate otherwise).

OBS

The term is supposedly from the fact that the last railway carriage on a train, traditionally had a red lantern on the back of it.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pig Raising
DEF

A small, weak piglet, as opposed to a normal weight pig.

CONT

The runt is the smallest piglet in the litter and usually gets stuck with a teat that doesn't produce much milk. If the litter is very large, these piglets cannot compete with their siblings. Many farmers will take these piglets from the litter and hand feed them.

CONT

Studies of the runt pig have provided insight into the importance of intrauterine nutrition on birth weight and subsequent growth potential. Frequently within a litter of pigs, one or more individuals, referred to as runts, have significantly lower body weights (as much as one-half or one-third) compared with their littermates.

French

CONT
