On dit d'une tente qu'elle est «une canadienne» par rapport à sa forme et non par rapport à sa grosseur. Les deux mâts et la faîtière donnent une toiture en pente propre à l'écoulement de la neige et de l'eau. Si les mâts sont élevés, les deux côtés du toit s'achèvent au-dessus de murs latéraux qui, avec le mur de l'entrée et celui du fond forment le rectangle typique de ce genre de tente. Si, par contre, les mâts sont courts, la tente devient «une canadienne de type cercueil» sans mur mais au même toit en pente caractéristique et de l'espace pour deux personnes seulement. La tente canadienne la plus connue est celle utilisée par les scouts et les guides.
