Au cours d'une thrombocytophérèse, on prélève du sang total par portion d'un bras du donneur, puis on centrifuge rapidement ce sang. Le sang se sépare alors en couches, dont on ne garde que la couche plaquettaire. Les couches restantes sont remises au donneur par l'autre bras.
