Patients with superficial thrombophlebitis typically present with a reddened, warm, inflamed, tender area overlying the track of a superficial vein. There is often a palpable cord.

Les thromboses veineuses superficielles, longtemps appelées «paraphlébites», sont au moins aussi fréquentes que les thromboses veineuses profondes. Elles se manifestent par l'apparition d'un cordon veineux induré, parfois inflammatoire, sous-cutané, à la face interne du mollet ou de la cuisse (grande veine saphène), ou à la face postérieure du mollet quand elle touche la veine petite saphène.

For important practical reasons, superficial thrombophlebitis is distinguished from deep-vein thrombosis. Superficial thrombophlebitis does not cause embolic complications, but deep-vein thrombosis frequently causes pulmonary embolism.

La presencia de un trombo en una vena se denomina clínicamente tromboflebitis o flebotrombosis. En los vasos periféricos tales trombos suelen empezar en las bolsas valvulares y luego se extienden a lo largo de la pared venosa o dentro de la sangre circulante, o pueden obstruir completamente la luz del vaso. La adherencia a la pared venosa provoca una reacción inflamatoria con síntomas locales; a consecuencia de la flebitis asociada, el proceso se denomina tromboflebitis. Cuando el trombo no es muy adherente y se extiende por la circulación que persiste libremente, los síntomas locales de flebitis pueden ser mínimos o nulos, y el proceso puede considerarse flebotrombosis.
