L'Accord international sur les bois tropicaux, qui fait partie du Programme intégré pour les produits de base établi en 1976 par la CNUCED, a été ouvert à la signature du 2 janvier 1984 au 1er mai 1985. Il est entré en vigueur à titre provisoire le 1er avril 1985. Sa durée de validité initiale était de 5 ans avec possibilité de le proroger deux fois pour une durée de 2 ans, ce qui a été fait. Il expire le 31 mars 1994 et est actuellement en cours de renégociation.

Ce volume de bois, qui peut provenir d'essences différentes ou d'une seule essence destinée à des utilisations différentes, ne doit en aucun cas dépasser la possibilité annuelle de coupe à rendement soutenu de l'aire, c'est-à-dire le volume de bois qu'on peut y prélever à perpétuité, sans en diminuer la capacité de production. Le Contrat d'approvisionnement et d'aménagement forestier est administré par le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec.
