A turbosupercharger or turbocharger is an external supercharger designed to be driven by means of a turbine wheel which receives its power from the engine exhaust.

Since the power required to drive the ordinary type of external supercharger is obtained from the action of the engine exhaust gases against a bucket wheel or turbine, the external type is also called a turbosupercharger of turbocharger depending on whether it supercharges the air or merely maintains sea-level pressure.

L'idée est simple; plutôt que de laisser au piston le soin d'aspirer le mélange gazeux dont il a besoin, on compresse puis on gave la chambre de combustion en introduisant dans la tubulure un mélange déjà comprimé. Ainsi, l'inertie de la masse gazeuse est-elle contrée. On se sert de l'énergie des gaz d'échappement pour faire tourner une turbine qui entraîne un axe à très grande vitesse.
