Huron society was matrilineal, meaning that when the father died, it was not his son who became chief of the clan, but the son of the deceased's sister. There were eight clans: turtle, wolf, bear, beaver, deer, eagle, porcupine and snake. During the 19th century the Lorette Hurons maintained [that] they stemmed from five tribes which were in turn subdivided into five clans (wolf, deer, bear, beaver and turtle). 1, record 27, English, - turtle%20clan

There are as many as nine pairs of pleural plates in the cheloniid known as the ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea; L up to 1 m), the Atlantic form of which, according to Brongersma, is a separate species (L. kempii). Oddly, the ridleys were long thought - falsely - to be hybrids of the green turtle and the loggerhead (hence the alternative name, bastard turtle). They, too, feed on a mixed diet, mainly crustaceans, and congregate in groups in shallow bays near the coast. 4, record 39, English, - Atlantic%20ridley
