By definition, Type A packages contain less radioactive material than Type B packages. While Type B packages must be designed to survive accident conditions, Type A packages may release a limited amount of radioactive material or lose a limited amount of shielding in a severe accident.

A type A package may be a metal, plywood or cardboard box or drum, with internal foam inserts, lead shielding, absorbent material (if a liquid), and additional containment features. The package will have labels and the transport vehicle requires placarding.
