Very High Gravity Fermentation (VHGF). The VHGF process under development at the University of Saskatchewan used a balance of nutrients, temperature control, oxygen and substrate improvement to achieve ethanol concentrations in the 15 - 24% range. This was a considerable improvement over the 12% normally seen in the fuel ethanol industry. The advantages include a reduction in water use, increased plant capacity, fewer microbe contaminants in the fermentation, and lower energy requirements during distillation.
