The Variants of Concern Leadership Group (VOC LG) and associated Scientific Advisory Council (VOC SAC) were established by Health Canada in February 2021 to support the Government of Canada's variants of concern strategy and rapidly scale up surveillance, sequencing, and research efforts of new and emerging variants. The Leadership Group was co-chaired by the Deputy Minister of Health and the Executive Vice President Science and Research of the University Health Network.

The variant of concern (VOC) spreads across all age groups and children do not appear to be at higher risk compared to other age groups. However, with increased transmissibility, the variant does raise concern: if we do not continue our efforts and redouble the measures to slow its spread, there will be a higher impact on already stressed and pressurized health facilities.

Recognizing the signs of a vessel that is soon to be derelict and taking preventative measures can save a great deal of time, money, and effort. If a vessel is determined to be a “vessel of concern,” it is likely to become derelict in the future. A notice should be posted on a highly visible section of the vessel that recognizes it as a vessel of concern, and a letter of concern should be sent to the last known owner of the vessel within 72 hours.
