Leurs modalités ont une valeur séméiologique restreinte par rapport aux autres renseignements fournis par l'auscultation. On recherche non seulement la transmission de la voix haute, mais aussi celle de la voix chuchotée. A l'état normal, l'auscultation du thorax pendant la phonation fait percevoir un bruit confus et lointain. A l'état pathologique, la voix peut être transmise plus distinctement.
