VOID COEFFICIENT [5 records]

Record 1 2017-04-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Physics
CONT

The reactor involved in the Chernobyl nuclear accident was a 1,000-MWe (3,200-MWt) RBMK, a boiling-water pressure-tube, graphite moderated power reactor that was developed and operated in the former Soviet Union. Because of the pressure-tube design using water as coolant within channels in the graphite moderator, RBMK reactors have a significant positive void coefficient of reactivity in which a reduction in the coolant density results in an increase in the system reactivity due to a reduction in neutron absorption by the coolant.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique nucléaire
CONT

Record 3 2011-12-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematics
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
OBS

A negative void coefficient means that the reactivity decreases as the void content inside [a nuclear] reactor increases - but it also means that the reactivity increases if the void content inside the reactor is reduced.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mathématiques
  • Réacteurs nucléaires de fission
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
CONT

The void coefficient of reactivity is the reactivity change in the core if the heat transport system voids. In a CANDU reactor this reactivity insertion is positive.

Domaine(s)
  • Physique atomique
  • Réacteurs nucléaires de fission
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
CONT
