Biovolatilization and biosorption have a great potential for bioremediation of contaminated localities. However, results showed that not all fungal species are effective in the removal of arsenic.

However, the [plants] seeds not only lost most of their water but also at least 75% of their mercury. The authors suggested that the elimination was by "biovolatilisation", i.e., loss of elemental mercury as vapour rather than by translocation.

[La] biovolatilisation [est une] technique de traitement de sol basée sur la biodégradation des polluants organiques. Ce processus est combiné avec la mobilisation des polluants volatilisés par ventilation. L'injection d'air se fait en effet dans la zone non saturée du sol et favorise la dégradation ainsi que la volatilisation des polluants. Le principe repose essentiellement sur l'augmentation de la concentration en oxygène dans le sol pour favoriser le développement des microorganismes et les échanges sol-atmosphère.

biovolatilisation [...] Certaines transformations des polluants par les microorganismes peuvent faire apparaître des formes volatiles de ces polluants. C'est par exemple le cas du mercure lorsqu'il subit une réduction chimique. Cette méthode présente l'avantage de diluer l'agent polluant puisqu'il passe dans l'atmosphère lorsqu'il est à l'état volatil, mais il faut prendre garde dans ce cas au fait que sa présence dans l'atmosphère ne soit pas plus dangereuse que sa présence dans le sol, même si sa concentration est plus faible (risque lié à l'inhalation).
