Il existe différents types de spiromètres. Ils sont divisés en deux grandes catégories : les volumétriques et les débitmétriques. Les premiers sont basés sur le déplacement d'une cloche ou d'un soufflet. Le déplacement est transformé en un signal électrique qui est proportionnel au changement de volume. Par dérivation du signal en fonction du temps, le débit instantané peut être calculé.
