CONT

Bariatric surgery, which is also known as weight-loss surgery, aids weight loss and reduces the risks of obesity-related diseases. The surgery falls into two categories: Malabsorptive weight-loss surgery, and restrictive weight-loss surgery. Malabsorptive weight-loss surgery limits the amount of nutrients your body absorbs, while restrictive weight-loss surgery restricts the amount of food you can consume.

CONT

There are two main types of weight-loss medications: 1) Appetite suppressants [that] keep [a person] from feeling hungry ... 2) Lipase ... inhibitors [that] keep [a person's] body from taking in about one-third of the fat from the food [they eat]. ... Weight-loss medications only work well when they are used as part of a program that includes healthy eating and regular physical activity.

  • Thermodynamics
DEF

The determination, during heating, of the change in weight of a material as a function of temperature.

OBS

In the case of clay minerals, differential thermal analyses show characteristic endothermic reactions due to dehydration and to loss of crystal structure and exothermic reactions due to the formation of new phases at elevated temperatures.

DEF

CONT

Weight loss. Unexplained loss of weight is a warning signal for the physician. A weight loss of 10 or 15 pounds in an otherwise apparently healthy adult may be the first sign of illness. Early diabetes mellitus, neoplastic disease, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, loss of appetite, frequently due to emotional problems, prolonged infection, chronic disease of the gastrointestinal tract may cause weight loss.

CONT

Three methods for determining organic matter are given below. The first is the classical Walkley-Black method .... The third method of estimating soil organic matter, loss of weight on ignition, is included because of hazards associated with the use of Cr2O72-. This ion in a strong acid medium is a powerful oxidant. It is corrosive to skin, mucous membranes, the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. It may create a cancer risk. Some municipalities restrict the amount of Cr that can be discharged into the sewage system. For these reasons, alternative procedures not involving Cr2O72- have been sought.

The weight loss/time curve ... can be plotted from the amount of water evaporated from a sample of thickened sludge.
