Record 4 2013-08-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
  • Boring and Drilling (Mines)
DEF

The recording of information about subsurface geologic formations.

CONT

Well logging involves measuring the physical properties of surrounding rocks with a sensor located in a borehole. The record of the measurements as a function of depth is called a well log.

Record 5 2013-08-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geological Prospecting
  • Geological Research and Exploration
DEF

The measurement of temperature in boreholes by use of a delicate thermometer that will record temperature anomalies of as much as 7 °F for thin coal seams in coal measures according to the thermal conductivity of the rocks concerned.

OBS

This type [of] logging has proved useful in discriminating between coal and sandstone and also in cased holes in conjunction with gamma-ray logging ... Also widely used in oil fields for locating position of cement, casing leaks, etc.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Prospection géologique
  • Recherches et prospections géologiques
OBS

DEF

The recording of the natural or induced radioactive characteristics of subsurface formations.

CONT

Radioactive Logging. These methods make use of natural or induced radioactivity, that is the emission of gamma rays or neutrons, in the formations penetrated.

French

  • Forage des puits de pétrole
  • Prospection géologique
  • Géophysique
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geological Research and Exploration
  • Geophysics
OBS

Electrical well logging was introduced by the Schlumberger brothers in the late 1920s as an extension of the resistivity method of electrical prospecting ... the resistivity scenes obtained with electrodes lowered into a borehole when plotted against depth, gave a 'log' of the stratigraphical changes, and in particular provided an accurate depth of each rock layer below the surface.
