Le cèphe du blé, Cephus cinctus, ressemble à une petite abeille. La femelle pique avec son ovipositoire en dents de scie la tige du blé, juste sous l'épi, et y dépose ses œufs. Les jeunes larves se développent rapidement et creusent, en mangeant, un canal jusqu'au nœud le plus bas de la tige; là, elles creusent un anneau qui atteint presque l'extérieur. Elles filent ensuite de délicats cocons où elles restent dans un état torpide jusqu'au printemps, époque à laquelle elles se transforment en nymphes.
