OBS

Novaculite is used as a whetstone for sharpening cutting instruments. The term is little used outside of Arkansas and Oklahoma where it is found in Lower Paleozoic strata.

La novaculite est une roche siliceuse cryptocristalline très dense, à texture homogène et de couleur claire. Elle ressemble au chert, mais s'en distingue par la prédominance du quartz sur la calcédoine. La novaculite est associée dans cette partie des États-Unis à du chert et à des schistes. C'est donc un complexe argilo-siliceux avec apports terrigènes.

El ejemplo más conocido es de Novaculita de Caballos y de Arkansas que se localizan en el tránsito Devónico-Carbonífero en una amplia región de USA y en la que existe más del 90 por 100 de sílex.
