Après lavage et ensimage, la laine passe à la carde, d'où elle ressort sous la forme d'un ruban moelleux mais encore irrégulier : défeutrage, étirage et doublage vont le régulariser. Passant alors sur la peigneuse, les rubans sont débarrassés des fibres courtes, ou blousses, qui rejoindront le cycle de la laine cardée. Le ruban de laine peignée, étiré et humidifié, devient alors la mèche qui, après avoir subi les opérations du filage proprement dit, sera transformée en un fil aux fibres définitivement fixées les unes par rapport aux autres.
