In conveyances, mortgages and many other assurances of corporeal hereditaments, numerous words descriptive, not only of every kind of easement, privilege or appurtenance, supposed to be capable of belonging to the property assured, but also of portions of the soil, fixtures and produce of the land (as timber) were, prior to the "Conveyancing Act," 1881, added to the parcels or description of the property, and were called the "general words." They were useful when there were any easements or privileges reputed to belong to the property, although not legally appurtenant to it, as they would not have passed with the property unless expressly mentioned. But with this exception the "general words" were as a rule unnecessary verbiage. [Jowitt, 2nd ed., 1977, p. 856]. 1, record 11, English, - general%20words

Words of purchase are words which denote the person who is to take the estate. Thus, if land is granted to A for twenty-one years, and after the determination of that term to A's heirs, the word "heirs" does not denote the duration of A's estate, but the person who is to take the remainder on the expiration of the term, and is therefore called a word of purchase. The word, heirs, is necessary in the grant or donation in order to make a fee, or inheritance. For if land be given to a man for ever, or to him and his assigns for ever, this vests in him but an estate for life.... [This rule] does not extend to devises by will; in which, as they were introduced at the time when the feodal rigor was apace wearing out, a more liberal construction is allowed: and therefore by a devise to a man for ever, or to one and his assigns for ever, or to one in fee-simple, the devisee hath an estate of inheritance; for the intention of the devisor is sufficiently plain from the words of perpetuity annexed, though be hath omitted the legal words of inheritance. But if the devise be to a man and his assigns, without annexing words of perpetuity, there the devisee shall take only an estate for life; for it does not appear the devisor intended any more.... It appears to me that not only does the testator not show an intention to create a joint tenancy, but in the use of the words "equal share" he shows clearly an intention to create a tenancy in common. See "Theobald on Wills", 9th ed., pp. 352-3, where cases are cited to show that where the words "jointly" and "equally" have been used the Courts have held the gift a tenancy in common. Also, that where there are words of division or distribution such as "to be divided" or "equally" it creates a tenancy in common. ("McEwen" v. Words of limitation are words which define the nature of the interest acquired. By happy contrast, dealing fully with words of grant requires less than a page. There are but three points worth mentioning. First, what verb should be used in a conveyance to pass an estate or interest in land? The answer is: any verb you like. Section 51(2) of the "Law of Property Act" 1925 provides that: 'The use of the word grant is not necessary to convey land or to create any interest therein.' Thus any appropriate word may be used, such as the customary "conveys" in a conveyance or, for example, "assents" in an assent. An important feature of the GR [generate and recognise] theory is that it makes the assumption that recognition is actually one of the sub-processes of recall. This means that in theory any item that can be recalled should also be recognisable. However, it has been shown that in certain situations subjects are unable to recognise items which they can recall ... This phenomenon is known as "recognition failure" (short for "recognition failure of recallable items"). 2, record 36, English, - recognition%20failure%20of%20recallable%20words

false cognate; false friend: According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia (source en.wikipedia.org), "false cognate" and "false friend" are not synonymous, but it is the only source consulted that makes a distinction between these terms: "The term false cognate is sometimes misused to describe false friends [...] False friends are pairs of words in two languages or letters in two alphabets that look or sound similar but differ in meaning. False cognates, by contrast, are words that, due to strange similarities in appearance and/or meaning, are often erroneously believed to share a common root, although the similarities are due to chance and unrelated word evolutions." 8, record 43, English, - false%20cognate

7, record 43, French, - faux%20ami
Record number: 43, Textual support number: 3 OBS
Contrairement à une idée couramment admise, c'est donc la désignation anglaise «false friend» qui est un calque du français. Les linguistes anglophones recourent d'ailleurs parfois à l'emprunt pur et simple de la forme «faux ami», les plus puristes préférant le terme «false cognate». 8, record 43, French, - faux%20ami
