On utilise actuellement deux grandes classes de machines selon l'application visée, qui dépendent du type de laser utilisé : les machines YAG et les machines CO2. Soudage YAG. [Les] lasers YAG [...] sont des lasers solides dont le milieu, de nature cristalline, est un grenat d'aluminium-yttrium [...] Le cristal, transparent, se présente sous la forme d'un barreau cylindrique. Cette configuration, imposée par son élaboration, gouverne toute la technologie du laser et ses performances, dont la puissance maximale (il existe aujourd'hui des cristaux YAG dits slab, ou plaques, plus performants thermiquement et plus puissants). Il impose une cavité stable mono- ou multimodule pour laquelle il n'y a pratiquement pas de variantes.
