YAWING [16 records]

Record 1 2021-06-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ballistics
  • Weapon Systems
CONT

Due to insufficient twist, some projectiles never become stable in flight, and yaw continually until impact. Yawing determines the surface area of the projectile upon impact.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Balistique
  • Systèmes d'armes

Record 2 2015-02-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Controls (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
DEF

The movement or an aircraft about the vertical axis.

CONT

The aircraft can rotate around three axes: the fore-and-aft axis (or the roll axis); the span-wise (nose-up/nose-down) axis or the pitch axis; and the nose-left/nose-right, or yaw axis.

OBS

yaw axis: term officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Commandes de vol (Constructions aéronautiques)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
DEF

Spanish

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mechanical Construction
  • Wind Energy
CONT

For larger machines an electrically-driven yawing motor, controlled by a small yaw-vane or by a small pilot windmill, and rotating the head of the main machine through a bull gear, might be preferable, especially in producing much quicker orientation.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Construction mécanique
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Moteur électrique qui oriente la nacelle d'une éolienne dans la direction du vent afin d'assurer une production maximale d'énergie.

Record 4 2007-04-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Navigation Instruments
  • Spacecraft
CONT

Each SRB [solid rocket booster] contains two RGAs [rate gyro assembly], with each RGA containing one pitch and one yaw gyro. These provide an output proportional to angular rates about the pitch and yaw axes to the orbiter computers and guidance, navigation and control system during first-stage ascent flight in conjunction with the orbiter roll rate gyros until SRB separation.

Key term(s)
  • yawing gyro
  • yawing gyroscope

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments et équipement de bord (Constructions aéronautiques)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
  • Instruments de navigation
  • Engins spatiaux
CONT

Les premiers vols se sont avérés critiques surtout que nous n'avions qu'un gyro en tangage, pas de barre de Bell et une tête rigide. [...] pour le confort de pilotage, un gyro de lacet s'est vite avéré indispensable.

French

Domaine(s)

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aeroindustry
CONT

Opinions concerning the operational behaviour of engine controls pinpointed the fact that individual engines exhibited differing acceleration characteristics; this could result in unbalanced thrust and consequent yaw moments developing in such critical situations as applying reverse thrust on an icy runway.

OBS

yawing moment: term officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Record 7 2001-06-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Ship Piloting
CONT

The gyropilot, commonly called an automatic pilot (q.v.), consists basically of three devices, each of which detects disturbances for the aircraft in one plane and corrects for these disturbances by moving the appropriate control: the rudder control for azimuth and sudden change in heading (yaw) disturbances, aileron control for roll disturbance, and elevator control for pitch disturbance. In modern gyropilots rate detection forms the principal reference and displacements detection plays a secondary role. In such designs yaw disturbance is detected by a rate gyroscope and the change in heading is detected by the associated gyrocompass.

OBS

yaw: The rotational or oscillatory movement of a ship, aircraft, rocket, or the like about a vertical axis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
  • Pilotage des navires
CONT
