Elle est dite jeune glace polaire quand, n'ayant pas fondu au cours du premier été de son existence, elle est entrée dans la seconde phase de son développement. Cette glace, à la fin du deuxième hiver, atteint 2 mètres et plus d'épaisseur et est plus haute sur l'eau que la glace d'un an; les contours de ses hummocks sont plus adoucis.
