Ondulaciones simétricas o ligeramente asimétricas originadas por la acción del oleaje sobre materiales incoherentes. La característica de su simetría o ligera asimetría se utiliza para separarlos en dos grandes grupos, que reciben precisamente estos nombres: simétricos y asimétricos.

La estructura interna de las barras consiste en laminación paralela y estratificación cruzada en artesa, agrupadas en secuencias de energía decreciente. En los surcos entre las barras se acumularon sedimentos finos con laminación cruzada de ripples de oscilación. En la zona resguardada, el sedimento es de grano fino, modelado por ripples de oscilación, con episodios de laminación en convolutas y capas de estromatolitos que muestran huellas de emersión y desecación.

El tamaño de los ripples de olas y su presencia están en función de dos variables: la velocidad de la ola y la granulometría.
