Un satélite de observación de la Tierra produce gran cantidad de información que debe ser transmitida utilizando ondas de radio en las bandas de microondas. Esta información proviene principalmente de los sensores de percepción remota como también de los sistemas internos de telemetría y control del satélite. A su vez el segmento terreno necesita transmitir órdenes de telemetría y control del satélite a través de canales de comunicación de diferentes anchos de banda especificados para tal fin.

The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into usable bands in the United States. The S-band corresponds to signals near 2.3 gigahertz.

S-band. Radar Detectors: A frequency band which extends approximately from 2 gigahertz to 4 gigahertz (1 gigahertz = 1 billion hertz, or cycles per second). Satellite: A frequency band which extends approximately from 1700 megahertz to 3000 megahertz (1 megahertz = 1 million hertz, or cycles per second).
