A narrow strip of leather that is held to the palm of the hand by finger loops and a wrist strap and that is designed to protect the hands from blisters when gripping or swinging on an apparatus.

OBS

In RLFGY, 1976,,,21, the term is plural; all these terms are mostly used in the plural form because the protectors are worn by gymnasts as a pair.

Dans RLFGY, 1976,,,21, «protège-mains» est pluriel car les protecteurs sont toujours portés par paire. Il en est de même de «maniques» dans la publicité où le terme a été relevé.

maniques : Le champion canadien de gymnastique, Philippe Chartrand, endosse la promotion de «maniques» pour une maison québécoise. Ce terme est approprié : «manique», qui s'écrit aussi «manicle», a comme synonyme «gantelet» qui veut dire «Manchon de cuir que certains ouvriers portent ajusté à la main, pour protéger la paume et les doigts du contact répété du fil et des outils». (LAROG, 1982,5,,4665). Ce protecteur est utilisé aux mêmes fins par les gymnastes.

OBS

bandages : Bien qu'utilisé par certains gymnastes selon la Fédération de gymnastique du Québec, le terme est impropre pour signifier des protecteurs.
